Located at the newtown wharf
At Alaskan Oyster Shack, we’re a family of proud Alaskans with a background in commercial salmon fishing and a passion for fresh, sustainable mariculture. Every oyster we serve comes from local farms—grown in the pristine, cold waters that make Alaskan shellfish so uniquely flavorful. Our deep-cupped, briny oysters are packed with rich, nutritious taste and the story of the waters they come from. We’re here to share not just the food, but the people behind it—celebrating the deliciousness of Alaska, one shuck at a time.

The local farms we source our oysters from
Blue Starr oysters
Tommaso Shellfish
Hump Island Oysters
Founded in 2010 by civil engineer Trevor Sande near Ketchikan, their meticulously tumbled oysters thrive in cold waters—never spawning, which means more flavorful, sugar-rich meat.
Canoe Lagoon Oysters
Located in Doyle Bay on Prince of Wales Island, Seagrove raises its “Alaskan Gem” oysters suspended in clean, tidally-washed cages across a 27‑acre lease. The farm focuses on sustainable, offshore mariculture and ships live oysters nationwide via cold‑chain air freight.
Shinaku Shellfish
We were on a Princess cruise (The Royal Princess) and we docked in Ketchikan right by the Alaskan Oyster Shack. I knew they were going to be great and I wasn’t disappointed at all. I got them just before boarding the ship after a really fun morning seeing the town in the pouring rain.
Rain was not going to stop me from enjoying these oysters and I was soaked, but thoroughly enjoyed them.
The lady selling them was really friendly and her husband is a local fisherman. These were the best oysters I’ve ever had! I’m guessing they were Miyagi oysters (I should have asked).
If you’re on the Royal Princess (or any ship, we happened to be the closest), do yourself a favor and support a local business while enjoying an amazing culinary experience.
The presentation in a bowl on ice was fantastic.
Pardon the fog on the camera lens. It was really pouring but that totally added to the experience.
She told me I could find some cover from the rain around the corner of the building, so I went there and ate these off of a wooden barrel and loved every minute of it; it might as well have been the Chef’s table at your favorite Michelin-starred seafood restaurant.
These oysters are worth the trip, rain or shine!
I think this will end up being an “if you know, you know” type of place.
Tony Bourdain would have loved these oysters.
